Jon Stewart Gives White America A Hard Talk About Privilege

Comedian Jon Stewart has had a lot of things to say on the Daily Show about racism in America. This has been all the more the case since the police shooting of Michael Brown and the ongoing protests in Ferguson, Missouri.

On one recent episode of the Daily Show, Stewart opened with what he called the “Ferguson Protest Challenge,” where he swapped out the viral Ice Bucket Challenge’s cold water for the mace and tear gas of Missouri riot police.

One of his most poignant statements was a response to pundits on Fox News who openly wondered “why the media wasn’t talking about black-on-black crime.

Stewart’s response is priceless.

“Yes! Why all the interest in holding police officers to a higher standard than gangs? They both flash colors and, yes, one of them has been sworn to protect and defend, but still.”

“Do you not understand that life in this country is inherently different for white people and black people?” Stewart continued, adding, “Race is there and it is a constant. You’re tired of hearing about it? Imagine how f***ing exhausting it is living it.”
